The assessment is just the beginning. What you do next matters most.
There’s always a lot of energy around the topic of personality assessments.
For decades, companies, coaches, consultants, and talent leaders have used them. Some swear by these tools as the key to unlocking insights about ourselves, our team dynamics, and why we operate the way we do. Others see them as oversimplified, outdated, or even limiting.
I see all of that, too.
But here’s what keeps me coming back:
These tools aren’t about putting us in boxes—they’re about revealing patterns we might not recognize on our own.
Years ago, I was speaking with a mentor and started a question by saying, “I’m a…” He gently interrupted:
“You aren’t a type. This just means certain qualities have a strong hold on you.”
That moment shifted everything for me. It reframed how I approach these tools—not as definitions, but as doorways.
They offer language for how we show up in the world: how we lead, connect, struggle, celebrate, and grow.
It’s not about the tool. It’s about how we use it.
These insights can help us move beyond roles, titles, and assumptions—and get closer to the heart of how we show up:
→ in crisis
→ in celebration
→ on teams
→ in partnership
→ in life
As I continue exploring how to best support my clients—and deepen my own self-awareness along the way—I find these tools valuable.
Not because they provide all the answers, but because they prompt better questions.
I’m less focused on which tool is right, and more curious about what becomes possible when we use them with intention.
I do have a favorite—one that considers the whole person, whether they’re in the boardroom or on the beach.
Because at the end of the day, isn’t that what we all want?
To feel like we can be fully ourselves, no matter where we are?
What’s your go-to assessment tool?
